A Wedding on Friday the 13th

Written by Ray Mossman

For the first time in my photography career I photographed a wedding on Friday the 13th. I will admit I had some reservations about it when booking the date.

The participants in the wedding were awesome, so this is not about them. It's about the superstitiousness of Friday 13th.

The good - I had never met the Bride and Groom before the ceremony, I was pleasantly suprized when I finally did meet them. The Bride was abosolutely stunning. The Groom was handsome so the photography was easy on my camera :)

The complete wedding party was a fantastic looking group. Without looking at the photographs to refresh my memory I believe the whole group consisted 19.

Everyone was extremely nice.

The photographs turned out awesome.

The weather co-operated.

The superstitious aspect of Friday the 13th - It's not uncommon for the bride to be a little late, she was late arriving by 30 minutes. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure

The groom was also late, arriving after the groomsmen. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure.

The top piece of the wedding cake never arrived. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure.

The bride slipped and fell two times that I am aware of. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure.

The knats were terrible outside.

The next few items happen to everyone's equipment at any given time. We use two shooters shooting the same shots but from different angles so no shots ever end up actually missing. We look at the back of the camera after each shot, meaning if we see the image, it's pretty much a given it is on the card and can be recovered by professional software. Nothing is ever deleted until every image is backed up on three different harddrives and then burned to DVD's.

My assistant's camera mysteriously got switched to its rear shutter curtain for a few shots. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure.

For the first time ever, about three images on my assistant's card was unreadable. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure.

While downloading my assistant's card to a DVD, about 75 images failed to burn. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure. They were recovered on the reburn of the DVD, appartently it was a laptop computer problem, go figure.

While unloading my equipment at home I dropped the DVD on the concrete which nicked the edge a little which caused a minor downloading error. Friday the 13th related or not? I'm not sure. The images were re-downloaded to another DVD (remember, nothing is ever deleted until all images are backed up multiple times) and recovered.

Now granted these things happen. But do they happen all at one time? Is it Friday the 13th related? I'm not sure. Will I ever book a wedding on Friday the 13th again? Probably not :)

I'd like to add a sidenote, the minor issues relating to the images occur with digital images frequently. The difference is Professional Photographers have safeguards and checks and balances in place catch and correct any problems just as we did.

Anyway, I hoped you enjoyed our Friday the 13th wedding experience. The Groom's name was not Jason. They are honeymooning in Aruba...
